Miss Lilly. You've heard much about this little firecracker since I started blogging. She is feisty, strong-willed, sweet, loving, dangerous, funny, and smart. We love her BUT she has been difficult. That's not why I'm writing this post today.
Since my children are adopted and we have a very open attitude with them about adoption, the subject comes up in a variety of circumstances. We feel adoption should be freely talked about so that our children never get a sense that there is something to be ashamed of. Clearly, we don't talk about it often, because the fact that my children weren't birthed by me is not something that enters our brains. However, today, a moment presented itself and I gently told the story, of Lilly's birth and adoption, to Lilly.
She listened with focused attention. Hanging on every word. Mind you, we've told her the story before but this was different. She seemed to be following along and understanding in a way she hadn't in the past. Her reactions were precious. She ooed and awed at just the right times. Tiny gasps escaped her mouth at the most suspenseful moments. And then, the big finale..."You, a tiny baby, came out and I was the first person to hold my new little baby girl, Lilly!" Her eyes wide, a sweet smile on her face, "Oh, Mommy!...Tell me...what were you wearing?!"
"Huh?" I did not expect that. She is such a GIRL!
